Break Concepts Down

Chemistry can be complex and abstract. My PhD and years of tutoring experience allow me to understand these concepts in the way that a teacher does. This means that I can break concepts down in different ways so that I can find the way that will work best for each student.

Build Problem-Solving Skills

Classroom lectures often focus more on explaining concepts, than how to apply those concepts to solve problems. But problem-solving is its own skill and there are a range of different approaches that can be used. I work with students one-on-one to find the approaches that work for them and build their problem-solving skills.

Get the Practice You Need

Because I understand the material in the way that a teacher does, I can create individualized practice problems to ensure that each student fully understands the course material and learns common tricks that regularly end up on tests.

What previous students say

Alethia makes even the most difficult concepts relatable, and does a great job of applying what you learn to real life. She tries really hard to make sure you understand one topic before moving on to the next one. Highly recommended!

Alethia is a fantastic tutor. Having worked with her throughout general chemistry and now organic chemistry, I continually rely on her to help reduce complex chemistry into understandable (yet not oversimplified) concepts. Her deep knowledge and fine teaching skills allow her to package concepts neatly and present them coherently. And given her experience tutoring UW students, she can often tell you where exactly to focus your studies in order to get a leg up on the curriculum. In-demand, yet flexible and affordable, Alethia will help you reach your chemistry potential.

― Jason T

Through our weekly tutoring sessions, Alethia not only helped me raise my grade in chemistry to an A, but also helped me gain confidence in my ability as a chemistry student. Before working with her, I second-guessed my conceptual understanding and was not confident in my test-taking abilities. She helped me establish a strong foundation in my understanding of the concepts by using specific examples and clear explanations, and supplemented her explanations by posing questions to ensure I had a solid understanding of the material. With her help, I overcame my unease toward tests due to the way she guided me through problems, making sure I was able to reach the answer on my own. She also provided me with additional practice problems that were above the level of what would be on the test, an effective strategy that increased my ability to easily solve the problems on tests. I had a very helpful and enjoyable tutoring experience with Alethia, and will be returning to her as a tutor for organic chemistry this year.
